Sarracenia purpurea

A fairly exciting plant for a total of 8 carnivorous species, all from North America. Most, perhaps all are hardy in Denmark. They have their name after the French botanist Michel Sarazin (1659-1734).

Sarracenia purpurea ssp. purpurea

I have even read that Sarracenia spreads or should have been planted out in the wild in northern Europe. I have also read that we've tried to let this plant, be a part of the Danish nature on small sites.

It is a plant for the very moist soil. I have all mine planted in peat, around a basin. In the wild they grow on moist, acidic peat bogs. However, no direct water.

Sarracenia Hybrid

The distinctive leaves are shaped as a case in which a liquid. The plants attract insects to land on tip of the leaf. The insects is falling or slipping down in the magazine, dissolved in the liquid and it takes up the plant nutrition.
